Days of Action are literacy events that pair fun, literacy-based learning activities with books to promote interest in reading. These events are scheduled in early summer to foster an interest in reading while our community youth are on break.
2017 will mark the 7th annual Days of Action. This event started small: one community, one day. Now, this event has expanded to what will be a three-day affair with individual events in each of the five counties United Way of Northwest Michigan serves. In 2016, events took place in Mancelona, Kingsley, Kalkaska, Suttons Bay, and Lake Ann. Each participating child received a backpack and hundreds of children filled them with free books! Those in attendance also received a Literacy Kit with an age-appropriate book and an activity paired with their book. Days of Action are a great way to make reading and literacy fun!
Books for the Days of Action are collected from community members, schools, and local publishers during a spring book drive. These books are sorted and organized by age so the most appropriate literature is made available to our youth. This year we are again hoping to deepen connections with community libraries by helping to sign kids up for library cards at each event.
Days of Action events also include book readings by local volunteers and fun, interactive activities for youth and their families. For the last three years, UPS has sponsored this event and participated by volunteering to pack literacy kits, sort books, deliver books to event locations, do readings at events, and supporting other Days of Action events and activities.
